One vendor wants to replace the condenser unit with an "American Standard" ... claiming that they are as good as Trane becuase they are manufactured by same company. (I'm in San Antonio, TX)
Depends how long you plan to stay in the house. If you replace the condensor only then you have a 11 yr old indoor coil which may spring a leak in 2 days/weeks or years. Then you are back to square one. If you are selling in a year or 2 I would take the chance. If not a new system with indoor coil may be better. Compressors cost well over $2000 to replace so we rarely do them.
Yep. If you had a power surge or a low voltage/brownout it could have nuked it but then it would have acid in the lines and be burned out. Ideally the tech should find out what happened to cause it to fail AND test the oil to see if it is acidic. If he puts a new condensor on a burnout then it will last 2 yrs or less.
Pretty good idea and you have a higher SEER unit.
