cracked sprinkler pipe

My attempts to prevent another freeze of my sprinkler system failed. I go to open it up by opening the valve and BAM water comes blasting out from a crack in the pipe that looks to be in the section that has the valve itself.
I think I will have to close off the water to the whole house to make the repair:mad:

So to DIY, I think I should close off the other valve, the one on the horizontal pipe, then use some wrenches and remove the valve and some nuts and take it to a hardware or Home Depot? and get a replacement.

Is there a technique for removing the valve, because when I tried something like this before when I try to loosen one way it just tightened the other way.

When you winterize leave that valve cracked open. It traps a pocket of water in the ball area and that's what can happen. Close main in house and then blow down. Some of those ball valves can be split in half like a union but you still have to thread the new one on. I believe if you look closely at the top portion of the valve those threads can be broke loose from the body. I am not sure if you will have much luck, they tend too seize up.

This was not on it when they fitted up the rest of it. Not sure if it's PVC or what but that side will have to be cut off so you can unscrew everything else and replace what's cracked. You need to learn how to properly winterize your system or pay someone to do it. Normally there will be another valve in the ground to shut that off and keep the house water on.
