I have a 1986 made Gerber toilet with a hairline crack in the water holding flush tank which causes water to drip out. My question is can I just replace the tank with something similar (doesnt have to look identical) from Home Depot or do I have to buy a brand new toilet with the bowl and tank?

The flapper outlet is standard in size along with 2 hold down bolts.

Guess I should mention that I replaced the fill valve and flapper assembly with new ones thinking the leak was comeing from on of them when I latter disccovered the crack.

Pics if they help: I know Im above the water line mark:rolleyes:

Well, sure you can replace just the tank: if you can find one. What does Gerber have to say
about the availability of replacement tanks? I don't think anyone else is going to investigate
which of the thousands of toilets a tank may or may not fit!

gerbers also have a unique tank to bowl seal that can sometimes be a pain in the rear.

You can get a just fine Kohler or American standard at the big box store for less than $200 and it will be better than your old gerber.

gerber tanks are still available at supply houses that sell gerber ..measure the bolt pattern at bottom and look at how it seals if you match it up it will work...ben sr
Will the new Gerber tanks capacity wise still work on this older model? I say that because the old bowl uses probably 5 gallons and new tanks only do a 1.6 GPF. If the 1.6GPF is flapper controled I can just take that out with a regular, right?

Thanks:)

Ok Ive been doing some thinking with a lot of reaserch and it might actually be cheaper to buy a new toilet all togeher from HD or the plumbing supply house.

If you had a choice what brand or model would you get? Looking for a 2 piece, regular single flush with front lever and something more budget friendly. Preferably one that comes with or can easily be replaced with a fluidmaster 400 fill valve, prefer them over all others.

opinions? Thanks again!:)

I broke the tank on my 1950's yellow toilet and figured no way on earth I could find a replacement and I could not find a new toilet to match sink/tub color (that funny yellow).

But I found the identical toilet on ebay and the pickup was a short driving distance from my house.

Maybe ebay could help? Just a thought. Good luck!

I spoke with a plumber and he can order a replacement Gerber tank from the supply house. There several newer designs that have the bolts 6 and a half inches apart that will fit the toilet.
But, will the new tank be a 1.6 flush? As you mentioned above, your 1986 tank probably uses something like 3.5 gallons per flush. If you go to a 1.6, it probably won't work properly. And no, I don't think most new tanks can be modified to flush 3.5 gallons.

I say replace the entire toilet.
