Our home has a root cellar under our garage. It has a dirt floor, and ceiling in boards, the insulation batting, then cement garage floor. Our garage is attached to our home, and is not heated (We live in northern Maine- cold winters!) The root cellar entrance door is in our regular basement ,which has cement floors and insulated walls. We have 2 issues. There is alot of moisture, and the ceiling boards are rotting, and insulation batting is falling out. We don't use the root cellar, and would like to either convert it, or fix it so it is not rotting, and maintain it that way. Whichever is more cost effective. I've had people suggest we could convert it to house our firewood.
The other issue, is our garage floor above is sweating. We have a rubber mat on it, and any part that is in contact with cement floor is wet. There are a few wrinkles in the mat, and these area that are elevated and not touching the cement, are dry. This issue has been only the past couple of years, unsure why the change.
Are these 2 issues related? and how could these issues be fixed?
