Proper way to install basement vinyl windows

I need to replace my basement windows while doing some remodeling and am curious about proper method of install. Should I build a window box with a treated inch board next to the concrete and then install the vinyl window or install the window right into the concrete? Attaching a couple photos. The broken concrete you see is for an old sloped window box someone broke away to frame in with drywall. The brick foundation is solid and intact.

Cement is probably just a filler and the window is in place with screws into the 2x4 framing lumbers. I'd look for windows that fit the lumber frames than including the cement filler. Search youtube videos for installing bsmt windows. But the window size may depend on how the outside is finished. You probably will not want to remove any outside finish. Leave the outside alone and measure for the window. Any gaps, some bsmt window has included plastic channel that allows for adjustment to the gaps. Usually up to an inch. Vinyl windows can be custom made but if you want to replace it quickly with store bought, you can also change the rough frame by replacing or adding.

Looking at the photo again, it may be the cement is holding the window in place. Could still have few nails or screws in the jambs. Remove the sash first from the hinge then cut the jamb at the corner joints and pry loose. Chisel, chip, scrape away the mortar mix to the frames or foundation and start there.

It was not a lumber frame. The top part of the window box was lumber but seems to be mostly broken when electrical was updated by prior owner. Here is a photo of the empty mostly concrete window box after I tried to chisel a flat surface as much as possible. I ended up framing the box with treated lumber. For the top part of the window box I had to add some blocking to have a new surface to attach to. Window has plywood in it now while I wait for window to come in.
