I want to build an outdoor pavilion with the shed style roof (see attached pic). The dimensions I am looking at will be 22 ft long and 14 ft wide. What is the minimum pitch I need to build the roof with (I am from NJ) for code and what would the height difference be from the front (highest slope) to the back of the roof.

Thanks,
Rob

Don't know the code there but if you had a 3-12 pitch the front would be 3x14=42 inches higher than the back but for building it you would apply the pitch to the distance between beams. If the front and back beams were 12ft apart, the front beam would be 12x3= 36" higher than the back one.

Slope depends on what roofing. Also in NJ and it's international code. I think min. 3:12 pitch for the shingles. The photo is highly finished. May have a metal roof on it. Roll roofing is option for less pitch but never attractive if seen from the house or distance. 3:12 = x:14 and solve for x.

Thanks. So if its going to be 14 ft wide, that means the front part of the roof needs to be 3.5 higher than the back part of the roof if I am going to use shingles. Yes? If I use a metal roof it can be less?

Sounds right. Metal roofing is not for flat roof because they have seams that's mechanical and they aren't guaranteed for water proof (worst case standing pool). BTW I don't know much about metal roofs. Search the net for metal seam roof installations. 1-2 hrs of reading should give you some ideas and you go from there to learn more. None of it is rocket science. For flat roof (that is, under 3:12), you need some kind of adhesive usually considered water proofing. These are chemical or tar based. If you cover the whole roof with ice shield, you may get away with less slope and shingles. Ask your town. They may not give you specific uses and ideas but min an inspector will/can strike down your idea.
Also 3 or 3.5 pitch may not look right. Photo pitch is less. Design, I can't help. Search the images, pick the ones that appeal to you and try to find out what pitch they are.

3/12 Pitch x 14' Span.
14.04*
Rise is 3'-6"
Diagonal is 14' - 5 3/16" Long.

4/12 Pitch x 14' Span
18.43*
Rise is 4'-8"
Diagonal is 14' - 9 1/16" Long

If this is the length between the post then you need to add your overhang.?

The 14' width I am looking at would be from outside post to outside post, so not including the overhang. I am trying to mimic the pic some (but with a shingle roof). That is why I wanted the min pitch they would allow by NJ code.

Judging from the picture I would say it's a 2/12 pitch.

Just my opinion.
Since NJ allows flat roofs why would there be a minimum.
This is not living space.
It's not heated or cooled.

Image

2/12 pitch x 14' Span
9.46*
Rise is 2'-4"
Diagonal is 14' - 2 5/16" from post to post.

2 foot overhang on each side.
Diagonal total is 18' - 2 5/16"

Just for a simple guide. I know your not doing an A frame but if you just take what you need this is good stuff.
