New Flagstone Walkway Mortar/Stone Gaps, Cracking

Live in Central Texas and had a 180 ft flagstone walkway installed on a mortar bed (with no wire/rebar support) in early December. Previously, had a crushed granite walkway that the contractor used as the base, but removed what he needed to get the proper depth to keep the flagstone from being too high. After less than 2 months, I'm seeing dozens of instances of mortar separating from the flagstone and cracks going across the walkway. Also, have dozens of instances of mortar flaking up. Some of it can be crumbled in my fingers. The white mortar also changes color 2-3 times along the walkway, changing from white to a light beige color. Is all of this normal while a new walkway cures and settles? Not to be rude, but would prefer responses from people who have actual experience in this situation. A big thanks for your input.

Get an opinion and estimate from a local contractor to repair or replace the work. Then get in contact with the contractor that installed your walkway and seek reimbursement.

Hard to tell from here why your walkway is failing, but it is, and it shouldn’t be only a couple of months in. There could be more problems beyond the bad mortar mix.
