Thanks to all how have kindly offered help and suggestions. I have fixed the problem and all is working well. It was a matter of switching the terminals aroubd .
I can see how easily this mistake happened. The previous hone owners switched out the TStat and never hooked things up correctly but their error was my learning opportunity.

What a great forum, so many helpful people so quickly.

I do, I see only 2 leads from the stats. There should be 4.
