Mortar hole too large to mount lights

I'm replacing the exterior lights on my house.

When I took an old light down, it looks like the previous home owner drilled a really large hole in the mortar and mounted using a big anchor likely meant for wall board.

However, the mortar in the hole has since disentigrated further making the hole even larger. Not only are the screws that came with the new lights too skinny for the hole, but so is the anchor that was previously used. The light fixture was mounted precariously to the exterior wall barely hanging on.

I tried going to hardware store for larger anchors, but not any luck.

I'm not sure how to mount new light now that the holes in the mortar are so large?

Are you trying to use the large mortar holes to install bolts that will come out through the fixture and just install finish nuts on them, or are you using a mounting bar/circular base plate that comes with light fixtures ?

There should be a box for the fixture, but it will be a bear to cut one in to those stones. And a surface mount box will be UUUUglly.....

The round mounting ring will help with the installation IF YOU have the two bolt mounted fixture and not the one with the single lampart going through the center of the light with the acorn nut on it. The round base plate is shown in pic, but only works if you have the two bolt fixture that matches the 8-32 bolt pattern holes shown. JMO

I think you should try another hardware store, you should be able to find what you need. There are all kinds of wall anchors out there. Worst case if you can't, find some filler material (wood, hard plastic, etc) and glue it in there and then use wood screws to hold the light up.

I almost suggested that Bondo and you may be right that may be the easiest way to do this. The only reason I didn't say that is I am not sure if a small area of concrete patch would hold up to drilling, might just crumble was my thought. On the other hand, my suggestions may just crumble as well.
