Kitchen sink drain assembly discoloration, what is the best option

I see this every day in my kitchen sink and always wonder if it's worth fixing it (right side discoloration). Image below.

I have no leaks, no other issues. It's all about how it looks. I have a couple of questions from the experts below:

  • On the drain assembly on the right, why do I see this discoloration? was this stainless steel and Is there a way to clean/fix it?
  • I can probably replace with a new assembly like this (amazon link). Sometimes I wonder if it's worth the hassle as there is no other problem with it. OR,
  • I can just buy a cover (Sink Drain Filter) like this (amazon link) and that will cover the drain and will make it look like new again without much effort.

What do you suggest.
Thanks

The strainer on the right is chrome plated brass and will not clean up. There's been some harsh chemicals used down that drain to decompose the chromium plating. About the only thing to make it look better would be to replace it with a stainless steel strainer.
