I am trying to learn more about how the HVAC system in my house is wired together. I have a two story home with one furnace that is hooked up with a zoned system (2 zones) using a honeywell hz311 zone panel.

On the zone panel there is a section for equipment that has 6 connections that can be made: Rh Rc W Y G DS/BK

Correct if I am wrong but the meanings for each of these connections are:

Rh - This wire comes from the 24VAC transformer on the heating system.
Rc - This wire comes from the 24VAC transformer on the air-conditioning system.
W - This wire comes from the relay that turns on the heating system.
Y - This wire comes from the relay that turns on the cooling system.
G - This wire comes from the relay that turns on the fan.
DS/BK - not sure what this one does.

So on my panel in the equipment section, the only connections used are Rh, Y, and G. I am confused why there is no connection to the W connector. If this is the suppose to go to the relay that turns the heating system on then i would think it would be utilized. I've included a picture of part of the zone panel.

Hot Air furnace,..??
Hot Water Boiler,..??

The Zone thing makes me ask the question....

 

I have an Amana Gas Furnace model# GCI115x35A, and an Amana ac unit, not sure the model number of that. But if needed I can look it up. There is a thermostat upstairs and one downstairs. There are 2 zones in this setup with 1 damper on each zone.

 

OK Guys, How ya do dat???? I thought 2 zones require 2 units???

 

The duct work coming out of the unit is split into to legs, and in each leg is a dampers.

 

Looks like they may have bypass the equipment W and went directly to the stats W. Can tell for sure, pic too small.

 

I looked at the panel again and none of the w terminals on any of the stats are being utilized. Here are some close ups of all of the connections on the panel

Looks like they bypassed the panel on the W connections. may be a problem with the panel. Or they don't know how to configure the panel correctly.

 

I think the wiring is all janky on this system. The homeowner whom i bought the house from wire it all and I dont think he knew what he was doing. I am working on drawing up a wiring diagram to show how everything is connected. I will post it on here when I am done with it.
