@rjniles When I push with just my hand, it stops and I can hear it hitting something. It's not attached to the joist but even if I use the joist as leverage, I'm afraid I'm going to mangle the wires or metal bar above.

@brric & @rjniles thanks for those tips, couldn't drill thru the rivets easily so went with the brute force prying. here's what i ended up pulling out.
