Like miloganite it's meant for inopportune applications - like when it's too hot.
Both being an extra and un-neccesary expense when dropped
(seeding or fertilizing) at the correct times such as fall and spring.


But the package has some cool graphics.

 

Fescue has deeper roots than bluegrass or many other lawn grasses. That price is about double what I pay for 25 pounds of fescue so you may be able to do better elsewhere.

 

I have tried other brands during past 2-3 years, they don't end up well. Every summer, crabgrass takes over some spot, and I keep over seeding every year.

If this grass seed can provide thick lawn to prevent weed out, it is worth the money.

 

What kind of grass do you have now?

If you have Kentucky bluegrass now, I would consider tall fescue a weed. I put Roundup on it when I see it.

 

Two years ago, contractor told me it is Tall Fescue, but not sure which brand of Tall Fescue. But I don't think it matters, as long as it is Tall Fescue.

Tall Fescue cannot self repair, but this one seems to be able to self repair.

The second reason is: tolerate drought. Often forget(also busy) to water the lawn when it is over 90F.

I am tired of over seeding almost every year. Repair the lawn and become a little better, then some grass die again in summer, the repair again in the fall, ....

So I hope I can find something can REALLY self repair. Since I have not tried this grass seed, not sure if it works as stated.

The drought protection is at seeding time... not forever.

 

Crabgrass will die off with the first freeze, but by then it has already dropped it's seeds, and they will start coming up later next spring.

Pull the crabgrass as soon as you see it, and then in the spring, put down a pre-emergent fertilizer that will keep the crab crass seeds from germinating. Pre-emergent will also keep any other type of seed (i.e grass) from germinating, so fall would be the time to do any over-seeding. Not sure how much crabgrass you have, but could take a few years of the above procedure to totally eliminate it. And if you don't take care of your crass, you are just inviting more crabgrass and other weeds.

Then tall fescue is a poor choice for your lawn. I would suggest looking into replacing with zoysia - it will be brown a little earlier in the fall and later in the spring than tall fescue but it self repairs and handles the heat of summer much better.

 

They are spreading fescues but I don't think there is a tall one that is spreading.

 

What do you mean? It says "tall fescue" on the bag?

Can I use this grass seed alone? Or do I need to mix it with other tall fescue grass seed?

 

More precisely, it says rhizomatous tall fescue, which is a variety that can spread (supposedly) by rhizomes underground, not just seed.

 

So it is seed with RTF, and I do NOT need other grass seed for over seeding anymore?

It is the product I can use alone, without mixing with other grass seed?

 

I did not suggest adding zoysia, I suggested replacing. Tall fescue does not play nicely with any other kind of grass; your lawn must be 100% tall fescue or 0%.
