Here's a lot of if's:

If the refridge has an ice-maker and water dispenser, and there's young kids involved, then I'd GFCI it
If the refridge is going to be subjected to any continual forms of water, I'd GFCI it [Monsoon Season of Phoenix AZ rain from car, no; live in temperate climate w annual 200" if rain, yes]

I am still a stickler for code, so I would make sure only the Fridge is on that circuit.

Note, running anything on an extension cord w the wrong AWG rating is a no, no, esp something w a VSD like a fridge.
