Front Porch "Supports"

Greetings one and all. I am new to the forum so please bear with me if I cause any undue consternation.

I own a home:

Above should be a pic of the humble abode.
Anyway, there are 4 "support" columns under a 4' overhang of an inset porch on the front of the house. The 2 columns on either end are non-existent. All they are, are 1x's constructed to look like the 2 center columns. the 2 center columns are 4x4 wrapped in 1x6's.

My question is, is there any reason why I cannot remove all four columns?

I thought originally that they might be for support, but upon a closer inspection, there was no cross member that they were holding up. For all intents and purpose, they appeared to be decorational in nature. I was under the impression that if the columns were "load bearing", that there would be a 2x12 or some other gargantuan piece of wood that those two columns was supporting, but there's . . . . . . . . . nothing. Near as I can tell.

I agree with engineer idea but we can see if we can prove you wrong first. There are ways to hide support.
How close to the outside edge are the posts. There could be a flush beam at the end of the rafters.
Does the ceiling of the porch follow the line of the roof or is it level to the house. If it follows the angle of the roof I would expect some weight is taken with a beam of some sort. if level more questions to follow.
Is the framing in the garage still exposed, if it is take a picture of the wall in line with where the posts would be out side where you might find the end of a beam.

I had the same overhang on my last house.

They had a 2x4 running across the tops of the posts, turned flat, that is. There was a tall aluminum box over the 2x4 to make it look like there was a beam inside similar to what you assume should be there.

These posts were indeed holding up the roof as the rafters were all bent from the sagging 2x4.

So, as mentioned, do not pull anything out yet. Check carefully.

It's possible you could have the same ridiculous construction I had.
And here I thought the good old days had better tradesmen than today....

The house may have special ordered trusses also, where the porch overhang was designed in to them, while not needing support. Just a thought.....

But I would NOT remove any posts from under the porch, until the support or design of the porch ...is verified by a certified board and loads guru and was then allowed to do so. JMO

Thank you one and all for your responses. I share some of your sentiments as to consulting an engineer as well as the construction craftsmanship of yesteryear

Hopefully, in answer to Nealtw's response this pic will of some use:

(The pic WAS the right way when I loaded it)
As you can see in the pic, I started to pull the soffit down and lo and behold came across a 2x8 that was up there. I was under the impression that, because of the width of the expanse between the walls that the overhang crosses (and just recently putting in a 105" window that required a pair of 2x12's for a header) that there was going to have to be, at a minimum, a pair of 2x12's running the length and looking at it from the outside, that definitely was not the case.

(As was this one. Should be rotated 90 clockwise)
This is what one of the center posts looks like. That's the 2x8 that the end of the truss and the top of the 4x4 are attached to (with the bracket thats screaming) I dare say that the other center post probably looks the same. Soooooooooooooooo, . . . . . . . . . . .

So much for this being a "qwik & easy" project. (I know, that's being naive to begin with). Let me have my moment.

I'll have an engineer come out and look at this mess and figure out how to make it right and then listen to the woman of the house who wants to totally change it :wallbash:

Once again, I'd like to thank everyone for their responses and information. Any information is better then no information and I appreciate it :notworthy:
