I want to put a free standing pergola on my concrete patio but i want to snug it against the house as close as possible in hopes that when i put a roof on it (thinking Metal or Poly) i can make it weatherproof.

I was wanting to attach it to the hosue but the more i read (and think) about this it may not be best since my two story brick home is actually wooden framed (brick veneer). I have drilled through this brick before (when putting in outside electric) and of course it is not that strong.

#1- can i weatherproof (flashing, etc) a freestanding enough to make it worthwhile?
#2- if i do attach the pergoal will the rim joist hold enough that there will not be too much pressure on the outside brick to casue crumbling/cracking?

Got a picture of the area where you want to build it?
If it's a single story then the new roof would have to be ran up onto the old roof and the rim joist would sit on top of the house walls after the fashia was removed and roof cut back, not just attached to a ledger.

Also if there's future plans for a roof you can not just have the post sitting on a slab.
It needs to be cut out and a footing pored.

are you talking about an enclosed pergola or an open pergola? where are you located, location has a lot to do with construction and codes.
