empty void in wall...need advice

Hello...I just recently purchased a home and started a bathroom remodel. While knocking down a wall, I found a void with some venting at the top. It was all drywalled, and at the bottom is a metal pan. The top has a metal pan with ducts on both sides. I found it weird that the venting just went to a empty void. Does this some familiar to anyone? Could it have been a old vented area that is no longer in use? Any info. would help. Thanks

Do you have a hot water heater with a chimney that just goes straight in the ceiling? Maybe they're actually venting it there, but that is probably WAY against code if that's the case given there's no actual pipe... just a thought.

Here's my config, for example:

Pipe goes straight to attic then out the roof through an empty wall space:

The pipe is insulated and is actually cool to the touch even with the hot water heater on, while the uninsulated part is hot enough to burn me. So maybe your setup is something like this, but without the pipe.
