Did I damage my fridge compressor?

Fridge is 1 year old. Yesterday, I was doing some yearly maintenance and I unplugged it without first turning off the temperature control (not sure if that matters). Then when I plugged it back in there was a spark at the outlet. The compressor started making a loud humming/buzzing, almost like it was trying to turn over, and was very hot. After 30 mins or so the sound went away and the compressor isn't hot anymore. Did I damage the compressor? Or is it normal for it to be really hot for a short period of time?

Sounds like you unplugged it while the compressor was running and then plugged it back in right away. It is normal for the compressor to not start in that situation. The pressures need to equalize within the sytem for the compressor to restart. The compressor has built in protection for this and I doubt you did any damage to it.

For best performance, wait at least two minutes before plugging it back in if you accidentally unplug it. Similarly, for air conditioners, when you switch them off, wait at least 2 minutes before turning them back on.

If a refrigerator or freezer is laid on its side or otherwise positioned not on its feet, you need to put it on its feet and then wait 24 hours before plugging it in, otherwise here damage could happen.

Thanks for the good tips. The fridge was unplugged for about 10 minutes before being plugged back in, enough for me to clean the cooling fan and condenser. When I plugged it back in, it just seemed like the compressor was struggling to turn back on and getting hot. It got me worried because this is a newish fridge and the old one died because of the compressor.
