BTW, if the facia goes under the drip edge, you can free hand the score.

 

Using snips like these and not cut to the tip each time will give you a nice smooth cut.

 

If this is a roof and you have drip edges, you may want wider cut so the cover can slip under the drip edge. At least one inch wider.

 

Most brakes made in the last 30 years have a stainless edge so a knife can be used to score aluminum. If you don’t have a brake, score it with a straight edge and bend it off.

 

If it’s typical aluminum fascia, the best way to cut it is by using a siding brake. score it a few times with a utility knife and then bend it up to about 90 degrees. Bend it back down by hand, slowly, don’t force it. Bend it up one more time using the brake and it should snap in two. If you try to cut it with snips lengthwise, you’re going to end up with an ugly edge. And also, using a utility knife with a siding brake is normal, nothing wrong with that. Doesn’t hurt the brake.

Cut some strips from the end (the 8" end) with some of the options above to see what works for you. If it is "flashing", it would be about .020". Something else could be up to .035".

Score it and bend it over, yes, it should break if it is .020" flashing.

 

I use the knife with my brake. I know your not supposed to.

 

Clamp a straight edge on it and score it with a drywall knife.

10 or so years ago, I found these on the side of the road. Fell off of someone's truck. BEST cutters I have ever used. (ever). Should you be inclined to buy a new pair.

 

That stuff is not very thick. Just get a pair of tinner snips to cut it. When cutting with snips your don't cut all the way to the snips or it get a saw tooth look.

 

How thick is it? How long are the cuts?
I use my band saw with a straight edge.
