Nap, that is one saw I was always afraid of. Have you ever had a cir saw kick back on you? My crew used one but I wouldn't touch it, I used an attachment called a Prezi or something like that. It was a chainsaw like deal that mounted on the circular saw and it worked great and it was safe, it made a 12 inch cut and you could control it great.

 

I usually go all around with a circ saw and then finish with a recip.

 

This is what i did with mine.

 

I do the same as 12penny.Finish with a hand saw if you don't have a recip.

 

I have a sliding miter saw, will go about 2/3 through, then you can finish by turning it over. Be careful if the 6x6 is not perfectly square that the saw does not bind and kick.

 

When putting up a pole barn, there were odd sizes poking above the top perimeter beams.
A smallish Stihl chainsaw took them down to flush quite well. Po)
