Get in the attic, and search for another battery operated device up there.

There was probably nothing wrong with the old hard wired one, you might have not known about the one in the attic.

As a side note the other chirper will quieten, after the battery is fully drained, if you can wait long enough.:devil3:

Are you over sixty? A lot of older people have lost their sense of directional hearing... myself included (about 20 years ago). Is it possible that you have another smoke detector somewhere near that is making that chirp? Those high pitched tones are a challenge for directionally impaired ears... mine have fooled me a time or two with the SD's I have installed (3 on the same floor about 20' apart).

Obviously you have disconnected the wrong alarm but, to be sure take it outside of your house and leave it. Return to the original site. If you can still hear it you definitely removed the wrong one!

 

I've had the capacitors keep the beeps going for quite a while after they have been disconnected. Was there a battery in the old unit? Was that disconnected as well?

 

Yes, the old one could have a battery back-up.

 

Is there a carbon monoxide detector plugged in an outlet nearby ?

 

Yes there is a carbon monoxide detector plugged in right next to it but an an adjacent wall. Is there something with that? I put in a new alarm with new barriers. I put the new wires in. Disconnected and reconnected power and it still chirps.

Some of the newer SD’s have WIFI capabilities, for example Nest Protects. Although expensive they will tell you their status 24/7. I especially like knowing if utility power is out when away from home but only if you keep your modem on battery backup.

 

Doubtful. Older threads are somewhat useful in their content, but people just don't read the notice under them stating it is an older thread and may not garner a response.

 

They should have a pop-up when you click on Post reply that says "Do you really want to comment on a x year old thread?". Give them one last chance to change their mind.

There is pop up when you open a thread that hasn't been replied in a long time. I don't know what the time frame is.
