Many pros would say NO. The BM for the box stores has a different formulation than what is sold in the corporate stores. I tend to think it's the same stuff with a different label on it. Who really knows unless you actually work in the paint industry.

My feelings are, "why take a chance?" Why not go to the paintstore where you know the product is the real deal. You will generally get better service and you KNOW what you're getting. If there's any kind of problem, you can go back to the store and get satisfaction instead of filling out forms and waiting in line at the box store to get your problem taken care of.

P.S. I did not know Benjamin Moore was sold in any of the Big Box stores.

 

Gym, I agree with you that you 'think its the same stuff....". paint formulations are not hard to come by/ shared by many in the chemical industry. label is mostly wher the perception comes in. marketing.

But, why do you think one "knows what he is getting", just cuz you bought it at a paint store? Do you really know what you bought?? I doubt it. But you dont have to be a coatings chemist to learn/find out. Do some digging. Good paints have more acrylates and titanium. rest is a list of enhancers.

 

Actually, it's a Jerry's store which is a chain in Oregon. They are the only ones that sell BM.

Tammy, most of the pros on here can walk/talk you through the paint selection process. I'm more of a Sherwin Williams guy but many on this site use Benjamin Moore.

To be honest I was not aware you could purchase Aura anyplace but BM.

Last I knew Jerry's Home Improvement was 2 stores. One in Eugene and the other in Springfield. They might be all of 10 miles apart.

 

Where I live, Ace Hardware also carries Benjamin Moore. It's not on their website for some reason.

Personally I'd be very surprised if the Aura they carried were different from a BM store. But I do understand the concept in principle. This is true with a number of products on the market in different stores or locations.

 

Right I forgot about Ace, all of ours was Bm and C&k now they are Valspar. I could never figure out the reasoning behind labeling two grades of paint under the same name. Was once told by a Valspar rep though that the paint at Lowe's was different from their regular paint.

Just seems like a place where 10s of thousands of people are buying your paint your would want your best. What he told me was pretty much, HOs were happy with a good enough paint. This was several years ago maybe their thinking has changed.

 

Tammy, I tell this to everyone - try to think more about the specific paint, than just the paint brand. Benjamine Moore makes good paint (more expensive lines), and they make crappy paint (cheap lines). Sherwin Williams make good paint, and they make crappy paint. Same for Valspar, etc. If you want to compare, you have to compare specific paints. I will take Valspar's best over Sherwin Williams worst every single time. And vice versa.
