Best way to fur out a basement ceiling 1.5"?

Hey guys. I need to fur out my basement ceiling 1½". I'm still on the fence of using suspended ceiling tiles or not. Not sure if it is worth the hassle, cheap look, and not sure if they are even fire rated.

So since I'm leaning toward drywall, I was thinking it may be cheaper to cut 2x4x8 lumber right down the middle and make two 1½" x 1¾" x 8 furring strips out of each 2x4x8, rather than stack two 1x3x8 furring strips together to get the 1½" that I need.

I plan to lay these strips "across" the ceiling joists, drill pilot holes, and use 3" drywall screws to secure the strips. Then for 5/8" drywall, I plan to use 1½" drywall screws to secure the drywall to the strips.

I'm open to ideas if there is a better way to do this or if I'm overkilling it with pilot holes and/or screw length.

Please let me know, thank you.

With 5/8" drywall you can do the strapping 24" on center, 2x? is the way to go, I would just use 2x2, 2x3 or 2x4 but you can rip them if you want, use a 3" construction screw or deck screws for the strapping they are much stronger than drywall screws.

Oh. Because I have pipes and wires that are that far below. It's too much work at this point to move them.

But I do like that channel you posted. Does it come in 1½? Probably not right? Actually, I just noticed it's $10 a length. I better off sticking with the $4.50 per 2x4 and get two put of it.

Thank you. Yea I think I'm about 7'-10".

This is actually a one bedroom apartment. I plan to eventually make it a legal apartment with the town but I'm not looking to rattle their cage just yet because its gonna take a while and I'm not even sure if I would put someone other than family in there just yet, still deciding. Does anyone know what I should do to satisfy them once that time comes? Will they approve it after it is already built as long as I had inspections done along the way?

I have egress windows in every room. I plan to get an electrical inspection and plumbing inspection. I'm not sure really what other inspections I should get being that the walls are not structural walls.

It's one of those things where I don't want them looking up my ass with a microscope while I'm taking my time with this. I'm thinking after it's all done, I can apply for the rental permits and as long as I have pictures and inspections to show them, that will be enough?

My area, ceiling drywall is 16" on center and more nails/screws per foot as well. Walls can be 24"

Hat channel will do the job when you include the drywall.

Hey I just want to bring up something. Would it be a bad idea to shoot the 2x4 furring in with 3¼" nails with my framing nailer, and then hang the 5/8" drywall from there? Is that safe, or no?

Also, that firestop you show in the photos. Would a ½" piece of dry wall suffice for that area?
