The best tool for this is the telephone--Call a taper !!! Ha Ha .

If you are going to hang the job your self--
Ruler-drywallers knife-rasp-square-dry wall foot jack-roto zip-screw gun-drywall lift-small crown stapler?



To tape--Buy these from a drywall supplier (AAMES is one) you will not find acceptable tools at the big box stores IMO--

Mud pan(round bottom if you can)-6"--10"--12'' blades--Mud mixer and 1/2 inch drill.

Stick sander--hand sander--large sanding sponges--masks.


Here is a short list of the muds---Durabond(bag mix) 20-45-90 minute setting time-Used to fill gaps

some like to set the paper with it--Very hard -not easy to sand

Green bucket---Loaded with glue--used only to set the paper--Usually thinned a bit with water before use.

Blue bucket--Used for final coats--Easy to sand--slow to dry.

This is way over simplified but will give you a starting point----MIKE---

I subcontract almost all my drywall work out these days. Att 55 I just don't find maneuvering 5/8" sheets of the stuff to be the fun it used to be.

Every now and then I do have to do a little project though. I find corner finish tools---inside and outside---to come in handy. I have nice ones I did not buy at a box store.

I also have this almost worthless plastic combination 12-14" knife thing that has never touched a wall. The silly thing is great for mixing dry mud in a pan though.

There is also this stuff called No Pox that comes in quarts. It really speeds tool clean up and does pull a lot of the pock marks out of the mud.

The taper that I like is busy right now. I have some other things to do before I get to this. He also insists on hanging his own board.

That is one trade that you learn only by doing. I'm a remodeler--I'm only a fair hand at taping--I'm to slow.

I hire out all of the larger jobs.

Most tapers will not work on homeowner hung rock-- I would not touch it either--There are a lot of things to learn about hanging rock properly.

There are a lot of professionals out there that also do sloppy work and do not know what they are doing. So he prefers to hang the board himself.
The one thing I have heard about taping is that is best to learn on someone else's house. Some house that you will not see again!

No no no this is not true, the best way to learn is to hang out with a taping crew agree to work for cheap if you can help out by learning a little at a time. most crews are strapped for profit because of the cuthroats everywhere so alot of tapers dont want to deal with teaching it , but if you know some tapers see if you can learn by hanging with them doing little at a time. you do not want to go to someones house and screw it up thats not fair to them... best way is to join a crew and take your lumps.

 

I finish other people's hanging at times and it often costs them as much as if I hung and finished it...
