At the very least change your furnace filter frequently.

I speced out an April Air furnace filter ( its several inches thick) for my new home.
I had one in my old place and they do pretty well.

Before that I had an electrostatic filter on my forced air furnace for several years.
They work by far the best in my experience but you have to pull the ' radiaters' to soak/clean then every few weeks.

You could get the junior model and put it in your bedroom at night.

If its allergies , could be dust mites , high thread count sheets and pillow cases will help.

Carpeting ? A central vac system is the best way ( I have it) or get a hepa filter for your portable cleaner.

It could be environmental . I lived for years close to a 4 lane highway(exhaust pollutants) with a park with wetlands(mold) 50 yrds on the other side.

The school where our son went had mold issues.
Our son developed athsma real bad , I had allergies.


We built out in the country a couple of years ago now and am healthier for it.
The new house has mostly wood floors , central vac, april air filter.

I only need to run the austin cleaner when I'm wood working in the basement.

My house is mostly hardwood floors which is good and I have a central vac, I think once I take care of all the dust it will hopefully help, and I also need to get the ducts cleaned. I will look at the portable filters for now as I'm on a tight budget. How much do the ones built into the furnace go for, and is that something I can install myself or would I need to get a HVAC guy to resize everything?

How old is the furnace.

Are you sure your not getting CO or CO2 pulled into your duct system?

 

HEPA technology is able to remove at least 99.93% of airborne particles. It will certainly help with your problem.

Hepa is an acronym for High Efficiency Particulate Air filter. They may help, can't hurt great if its allergies. On a tight budget, you could also look into a Swordfish for the furnace, often on sale at CDN Tire for 30% off....
Definitely do the ducts and if you need a 24x 20 size filter box for the furnace I have a spare, brand new in Waterloo, available cheap... PM me.
Also suggest you read up on Oil of Oregano. Nothing has reduced my colds and allergies like it has... I feel bullet proof but used to get a lot of bad chest colds since having pneumonia as a child, (real pneumonia, 7 days in an oxygen tent, not my kid has "pneumonia" because he sneezed like every paranoid parent thinks today.)

I've been getting lot of colds latetly, pretty much since I moved into my house. I'm starting to think it's an air quality issue. The ducts are in bad need of being cleaned, and I'm not sure when is the last time the filter got changed, and on top of it all the construction work caused dust that might still be lingering around.

What is my best solution to remedy this? Getting the ducts cleaned is a given, I want to get that done soon. Would installing a hepa filter help out a lot as well? Can these be purchased at the hardware store along with regular filters or is this something more specialized and expensive?

Would a portable air purifier do the trick for now?
