Hey all.
I have an Andersen door with a unique (at least to me) locking mechanism. You have to pull up on the handle to be able to turn the lock. Through Google searching, I believe it is called a 3-way lock door?
Anyways, the lock works fine, I just mention that in case it affects my question. The door handle pulls out of the door, but not off the handle. From either side I can pull the door handle out away from the door maybe 2 inches. The handle stays attached to the spindle (I learned this term from google pictures) and will still turn. I can push the handle back into the door fine, and it will feel attached. When the handle is pulled away from the door to one side, I can not pull it out from the other. When I push it back in on one side, I am able to pull it out from the other.
The handles and lock mechanism still function fine as long as you apply no outward pressure when using the handles, but I'd like to know what's going on and determine whether I need to fix this before it gets worse.
The posts I find online are all about the handle being loose OR falling off. My situation is neither. The handle does NOT fall off, it stays attached to the spindle. The handle is not loose (it doesn't rock or jiggle), it just can pull away from the door. I did see some posts which mention a broken spindle, and think this may be more likely, but I believe if the spindle was broken, then it should be pulling out of the door as well? It only pulls out maybe 2 inches.
I appreciate all insights. Thanks.
