I need a little help on how to frame some windows into an outside wall that I don't believe is load bearing.
We live in a split level house with a vaulted ceiling in the living/dining/kitchen area. My wife has always wanted to add windows to the large wall in our living room and dining room because it faces south and would let in a ton of light. I recently came upon two large, reasonably priced windows that closely match the windows currently installed in out house. The widows roughly measure 89" wide by 60 inches high. I have attached a picture to this thread that shows the wall in question with some tape I threw up to get an idea on how much space two windows would take up on that wall.
So here is my question/questions. I was told that the way the ceiling/roof was constructed puts all of the load on the east and west (left and right in picture) walls. Is that correct?
If so, I was then told that it should be easy pretty easy to frame in those windows. Just take my rough opening and add 1.5" to the top and bottom and cut out the sheetrock. Then cut out the studs and frame in the rough opening with 2x6", just laying them flat on top, bottom, and sides.
I realize there is more that will go on with taking off the siding, etc., but is that how I can frame out the window? If it's not load bearing, do I not need to put in a header of any sorts?
Thanks for any help!
