Can I use a 2x4 for a concrete expansion joint or does the expansion joint have to be a 1x4 furring strip?

Are you asking how to form up for an expansion joint, or were you thinking of leaving the wood in place?

The wood will eventually rot out and you will have a rather large gap left by using a 2x4.

Sidewalk that connects two 10x12 structures. The structures are built on 18 inches below grade and 12 inches above grade foundations (to avoid high waters during rains). In between the structures is an existing 4" slab. So I'm thinking of putting expansion joints between the foundations and sidewalk and between the slab and sidewalk. Ideally I would like to remove them after the pour but from my experience wood can be awfully difficult to remove if the concrete latches onto it.
