Folks, I have a Whirlpool refrigerator (model #GX5SHDXVD03). During the summer when humidity is up, the evaporator coils freeze up about twice a month, which means the refrigerator will not cool anymore. I can manually put the refrigerator in its defrost mode to thaw the evaporator coils (I tap a few buttons in sequence on the control board to activate). Then the coils will clear up and the unit will work fine for a week or two. So I know the heating element works fine. But it doesn't seem to take care of the issue on its own like most refrigerators should. Any thoughts on why this would be happening?

Our SinL had that problem with their WP and it turned out to be the main board. He found a compatible aftermarket board that worked for about $45. If I can remember tomorrow, I'll ask him the model number.

According to Part Select, that is the most common cause, but don't discount a clogged drain line. Also, the display/ice/water dispenser on our WP fridge becomes intermittent from time to time and everything points to the main board. I find if I pull the power for 10 minutes or so, it resets/clears itself/gets over its hissy fit and I'm good for many months.

This is great feedback. Thank you!

I thought of that too. But when I had it apart last summer, the line was open. So I'm leaning towards having a board problem.

@m_ridzon sorry for the delay (they have an infant so, busy). He found the aftermarket board for their fridge on Amazon selling for RDEXP. Unfortunately, it seems they only sell the one board for some reason and it isn't compatible with your model. It isn't compatible with ours either and it is acting up again.

If you search around using the board's Whirlpool part number you might get lucky with something cheaper. Maybe Ebay but that is often a bit of a crap shoot.

Good luck.

I've had fairly good success finding the part number I need on the appliance parts websites and then using the part number to search on Amazon.
