Which backerboard for my shower?

WOW.......Just did my first shower with this new go board.....could not believe it, but it is LIGHT and INEXPENSIVE and WATERPROOF.....BASICALLY MIRACULOUS.

(Now, it does not have the "test of time"....maybe 3 months to date....but we incurred no install issues at all.)

You need to tape/waterproof/reguard your joints....but that is certainly easy.

Actually, I travelled out to my daughters to help my SIL with the bath remodel.....he had gotten this stuff....mater of fact I almost did not believe it was waterproof....checked the internet .....and this assembly is the simplest easiest less costly wall assembly that I know of.

I was worried about it'sstreangth , we were on standard 16 OC, and had no issues.

Good luck

(PS: Just as a sidelight FYI, I believe Hardi now makes a waterproof (not standard water resistant) product....basically same assembly....but hardi is more difficult to cut and certainly heavier.)

PPS: I don't recal go board having fuzzys at all....certainly not slick...but had no adhesion/tack problem issue at all.

MTN, thanks for the reply. You are confirming my thoughts that this can be a Go(Board) to product (excuse the pun). Light, easy to cut and install, comparatively inexpensive. I am aware the requirement to seal and Redguard the joints. How did you attach to the framing, product literature says roofing nails or backerboard screws? I plan on using backerboard screws. Did you Reguard over the screwheads?
RJ.....Yes I think I remember that MI did say roofing nails ok......I'm too old school and used the expensive green "shower" screws....plus I had a mess on hand. We did redguard up the screw heads and he had a corner seat that we had to tape and redguard also.

RJ.....Second thought.....

But my SIL also had ordered a premade (standard in his case but also could be custom made for special drains) shower base. I can't remember what he paid...but it was not exhoribtant.

It was slicker than snot.

Best I can describe....it was a waterproof sorta foamish board preslopped perfectly and tile ready......It too was light weight....came slightly oversize that we trimmed to his specs. Set's down in a raked thinset bed underneath...in his case we did add additionl plywood sub floor. The goboard to shower base waas a simple tape/redguard assembly.Don't remember whether it came with the shower drain, but I think it was an oatey without the flanges for a rubber liner...anyway it was simple/easy also.

He did order from internet and I don't think the BB's carry it.

Boy...wish that stuff had been around years ago..... I can remember the hours sloping a sub base perfectly and then a top mud bed....what a PIA.

All this was specially good as they live in a very nice condo without any space to mix mortor or cleanup outside. We had the entire bath gutted....so set my tile saw up right in the bathroom.....little tight working....but actually very convenient.

Oh....we had two insets involved also....framed them in/covered with go board and taped/redgaurded them in.

EDIT PS: In my case, I think I misspelled sloping above.....in my case I think it is spelled slopping.:);)
