I am no expert, simple tasks I use VLC media player. It allows editing especially video chopping. It is free.

If you get into re encoding, or increasing the light in a video over the whole length you may need a current tech processor and over 32 gig of ram. I used to try my hand and burning videos to DVD. Which required encoding for the DVD players, doing a slide show of baby pics took all weekend to set up and burn one DVD for viewing. I did 6 copies for family when the baby was born. I did not have a current processor and had 8 gig of ram.

I had been using Corel VideoStudio since 2003 maybe, I think it had a different name in the beginning before Corel bought it, but I can't recall. I haven't used it in a few years as I'm not doing any kind of content now.
Anyway as I recall it did have a bit of a learning curve, but everything was very well documented and there were a lot training videos. I cannot recall a single thing that I wanted to do which the program could not do. I recall one update removed one of my favorite transitions and I didn't like the "replacement", but really that's the only bad memory I have of it.

I use the free version of DaVinci Resolve. Kindof complicated for basic stuff, but it has lots of features if that's what you want
I started learning editing during film school and stuck with DaVinci Resolve from that point on. The free version has more than enough features for basic and even advanced edits. I mostly use it for cutting videos, adding some effects, color tweaks, and audio cleanup. The layout took a bit to get used to, but it gets easy once you mess around with it a bit.
