I wanted to get your opinions on the pricing for this. I had a plumber come out and replace 2 water shut off valves, one before and one after the meter. These are the water shut off valves inside my home, in the utility closet. I had my condo association shut off the main water to the entire building for this process.

Now, they were done within 30 minutes, and completely gone in an hour. It only took that 1 hour because of calling/waiting for the association maintenance worker to come turn on/off the main water. I was expecting maybe $500-600, for 4 hours labor (2 guys x 2 hours) and then $100 for parts... Idk, maybe I'm being nitpicky, but is this what it cost nowadays?

Yes, that could very well be normal depending on location.

You already paid in full with cc, so it's too late now. But next time, the only way to keep them honest or to know for sure if it's out of range is to get at least three estimates first then decide who to go with. Just my opinion.

Btw, welcome to the forums Igrits. Sorry you got gouged on that one.

I agree, 1200 bucks for two valves does seem a little steep. However, that may very well be normal for your location.

That's why it's important to get estimates. They should all be within 50-100 bucks of one another. If one is way out of range from the others, stay away from that one.

Maybe, just maybe, you could contact your state contractors' board (assuming the plumber holds a valid license) and file a complaint.
Most likely you will never get an answer.
If you get an answer, it will tell you that you should have gotten more estimates before you authorized the repair and once you paid, there was going back.

Look at that as a lesson for the future.

Don't pay it. Wait for them to come to you and tell them the bill is too much and offer to settle for half.

It looks like you had a company fully insured that doesn't mind working in condos, and with a pre-set price list. And for work like that, the price of hiring lower can be quite costly when something goes wrong. There's nothing like getting a call for a condo flood, with water running to the unit(s) below.

I have to see a $350.00 valve. Please post a picture so we can see the cadillac of valves.

Plumbers are expensive in my area. I wanted to get a water line run for the new refrigerator and got 3 quotes. $1100, $800, $600. Wound up buying parts myself and paid a handyman $150. No leaks or issues in over a year. This line was no more than 5' total.

This isn't Do It Yourself.

This is a request for us to comment on OP's Do It To Yourself by not having multiple quotes and written estimate and firm contract.

Sadly, we all agree - OP got taken and has no recourse.

What did P. T. Barnum, allegedly, say about "born every minute."

I paid $900 in the Chicagoland area for those same two valves - I had three estimates all basically the same. I thought it was outrageous and I justified making the appointment by expecting to see a seasoned plumber soldering like an artist. I got a guy using a Milwaukee pro press tool for most of the work. The small amount of soldering he had to do was kind of laughable, including how bad he was at it. Basement floor littered with solder droplets and just an ugly job. Even the pro press was crooked. But I did pay it, because I didn’t want to deal with removing galvanized (haven’t done that yet) and didn’t want to answer for our house potentially being without water until I could figure it out myself. Thankfully this site has saved me thousands, so I don’t worry about it too much.

Well it seems the OP is shy about posting a picture of these cadillac valves. Could you post a picture of these expensive valves to give us a idea what is being used?

Looks like the finest valves and fittings available… or whatever he could find on the floor of the truck.

He had started to put the copper riser in place as I was checking to see if he needed anything, and I had to remind him he forgot to replace the second valve.

Then when he was leaving he asked for a 5 star Google review because his boss gives him $25 cash for that.
