Hi - I have a double sink and I'd like to re-plumb the drains. The current plumbing makes it difficult to store anything in the cabinets underneath, so I'd like to do what I can to make that better (without sacrificing anything).

As it stands now, the traps (two) are right below the drains. After the trap, the pipes go to the back of the cabinet, then they meet in the center, and go down to the basement.

My question...what are the codes/best practices I should keep in mind? I don't know much about drain plumbing.

Does each side need it's own trap, or can they share?

Just after the drain reaches the cabinet, can I install an elbow, sending the drain towards the back of the cabinet, then put a trap in, and go down to the basement?

Thanks.
