Most of us have been homeowners for a long time and as such have no doubt acquired quite a collection of tools.
However, I began to think about what tools I would advise a first-time homeowner to get. I know there are a plethora of websites that talk about this but I often find they are missing what I consider essential tools or have tools that just seem excessive for new homeowners starting out.
For anyone wanting to use this list as a guide, consider you only want to buy a tool once, I therefore advise you buy the best tools you can afford. Additionally, you do not have to get it all at once. There are basic tools to have and others can be added as needed or when you afford what you want.
My recommendation of tools to have upon moving in are:
Tape measure (25' min)
Hammer
Screwdriver set 6 pcs
Pliers set consisting of at least, needle nose, lineman, tongue and groove, and slip joint
Utility knife
Adjustable wrench 6", 10"
Putty knife 1.5"
LED flashlight
LED Headband light
Stud finder
Cordless drill
Titanium drill bit set
Torpedo level
Electrical tester
Work gloves
Safety glasses
This tool kit will let you tackle most basic home repair issues and tasks.
During the next year or two, these can be added on an as needed basis.
6' fiberglass step ladder
Combination square
Nail setter set
Cordless impact driver
Impact screwdriver bits
25' extension cord 14/3
Wet-Dry Vacuum
Random orbital sander
Levels - 2', 4'
Pry bar
5-in-1 multi-tool
Caulk gun
Dust mask
Hearing protection
Work light
Glue gun
Speed square
Hand saw
Hack saw
Compact hack saw
Vice-grip pliers set
Pry bar 12"
Hex wrench set
The majority of DIY jobs can be done with just these tools. From here you can add more specialized tools or ones that just make tasks easier.
I would be interested in what others would consider tools a new homeowner should have.
