Wife got bit by the "we should raise chickens instead of paying high egg prices" bug. So now I'm building a chicken coop. I've got the coop and the run under control but the roof joists or trusses (not sure what we're supposed to be calling it) I can't figure out how to cut the birdsmouth right and with lumber prices where they are I don't want to experiment and waste lumber.
The coop is 6ft from top plate to top plate ("front" to "back"). It's only 12x6 ft overall and I'm wanting one 12 foot long roof. I'm just doing a lean to style of roof. So for ventilation I'm going to add 4 inch 2x4 risers on the "front". So, that's 4 inches over 6 feet. I'd nail the 2x4 to the riser on the front and then birdsmouth the back so that I have a foot of overhang off an 8ft 2x4 (6 over the coop/run and one foot on each side). Found a couple of template builder websites but they ask questions I don't know the answer to because you have to know a few things just to put numbers in the calculator that I'm not grasping right now.
Advice is appreciated!
