Attached photo is of a mid century split level roof with gabel ends at 5:12 pitch, there are (5) irregularly spaced 2x4 post supporting the ridge beam which sit on a 16 feet long (2)2x18 wood beam. The wood beam is suppported by a wall on the floor below. The roof was re-shingled 12 years ago, and my guess is that these supports were placed to correct a sagging ridge beam. My question is can I safely remove these post and beam without the roof caving in? This discovery was made after I wanted to remove the wall underneath to make way for a open kitchen.

Why do you want to remove it? It looks like it could be used to hang the ceiling from it so you could remove the wall below.

It is anyones guess what the beam was put there for, the sag is not good news. You would still want an engineer to look at it.
He may want more layers added to it.
