Strange Roof Framing - Are these ridge supports temporary?

Attached photo is of a mid century split level roof with gabel ends at 5:12 pitch, there are (5) irregularly spaced 2x4 post supporting the ridge beam which sit on a 16 feet long (2)2x18 wood beam. The wood beam is suppported by a wall on the floor below. The roof was re-shingled 12 years ago, and my guess is that these supports were placed to correct a sagging ridge beam. My question is can I safely remove these post and beam without the roof caving in? This discovery was made after I wanted to remove the wall underneath to make way for a open kitchen.

You don't support the ceiling from the rafters. You use a beam at joist height, or under the joists or over the joists.
The question would be the ends of that beam have to be supported thru walls below right down to the foundation.
