Hello all,

I'll start siding my new house in about 2 weeks but just finished a walk about for it. When they framed the house they framed it "square" but not directly flush with the foundation. The RIM joist / sill plate sits back and tappers up to 1 inch from the concrete exterior wall in one area. I'm doing 12 inch, 7/16 LP Smartside siding.

So my questions is this, my starter strip and siding will only be 7/8 thick so it won't cover the entire foundation exposure. My plan was to put some Z flashing over the exposed concrete. Is this acceptable? If so how far should that flashing go down the concrete? 1/2? 1 inch? Also what metal doesn't react with concrete?

This also comes to the fact that I thought that you started half inch lower then the sheathing for water purposes. So to keep the siding look level around the entire house do you think i should be putting flashing around the entire house now because the siding basically sits on the concrete on certain spots and is flush with the bottom sheathing?

I forgot to take pictures so I'll post some later tonight.

Thanks for any help, much appreciated.

I think I understand what you're saying (and it's very common) but I'll hold off commenting until I see a picture.

What stage are the walls?
Has the sheathing been installed?
If the foundations really that far off I'd be back charging the foundation company for all the extra cost to make it right.
Only thing I'd be using "Smart Siding" on is a shed or dog house.
What "starter stip" lap siding needs a kick out strip not a starter strip.
Without a picture by your decription I'd be building out the wall instead of Z molding so the siding ran past the foundation.

Use the z flashing, either diy bend or use/modify roofing drip edge. Any overhang will work. To future proof, check the condition of the sill plate (may be damaged), 15 lb tar paper, drip edge, ice shield, then side.
