Return Grill and Molding Revision Choices

Daughter's house has molding in this room interrupted by a return grill. It looks a bit odd so to perhaps improve the visual, the options I thought of follow. View attachment 763517
I presume the Center option is no go as it would really restrict the return but perhaps it is ok?
The Moved would be to rotate the grill so it occupied more of the vertical stud bay than the horizontal as in Now.
The Surface would reinstall intact molding and cut the grill to fit around the moldings.

Another alternative: the other side of this wall is a center hallway; would closing this one off and opening the other side be ok from an HVAC perspective?

Thoughts or suggestions?
How about extending the molding from left to right and removing the drop down pieces/ You cannot reduce the size of the opening or it may whistle or starve the furnace for air and overheat it.
