No you don't. THat's why some manufacturers even went so far as to print "DO NOT REMOVE" on theirs. It's in the nail zone which also gives the nail additional holding power.

That bitumen strip is what beds the shingle into the course below and heals the nail location.

It prevents the shingles from sticking together in the bundle. With most newer shingles, the plastic strip is on the top of the shingle, some even on the front of the shingle. Just depends on how they are packaged.

Shingles falling off?

Hello, I'm trying to figure out why I have shingles falling off in a one year old home. I first noticed this last summer. Had the roof looked at by a professional, and repaired for another issue. It was checked at that time. Anyway, one or two shingles were on my front lawn at that time.. had fallen from that area above. Then after our first snow this year, a few weeks ago, I've seen 3, all at different times on the lawn in the same area. I am wondering why this happened. Never had this happen on any home I've lived in. Thank you!

Hello, I'm trying to figure out why I have shingles falling off in a one year old home.

Look at the shingles that blew off for clues. My guess is they were nailed too high, and probably with air guns set wrong which causes the nail to blow through the surface of the shingle.

Sometimes the sealant fails too, but it's usually the nailing.
