We recently purchased a home from 1946 and have found that it has no studs on random walls. There are additions that have studs, but the original walls do not seem to have studs. We found this while trying to hang some floating shelves. We have plans for wall cabinets and lots of floating shelves in a house with possibly no studs lol. Anyways, my husband cut a strip out of the wall to see why we weren't finding studs and that's when we found some white flat boards (about 6x1) with wood going diagonally in between those and insulation. My husband isn't too thrilled about this, but I figured this is just an old house thing. Plus the home was originally siding, and when they added on, they bricked it in. So I'm not worried about structure, unless someone comments here and makes me worried lol. Any knowledge on this? I've read some posts on people with no studs in 100+ yr old houses with no issues. But I'm trying to figure out how I can achieve my floating shelf and wall cabinet aesthetic in our master bedroom without studs. Luckily the places we really decorate are additions with studs. Also, I figured we could just gut the master and put up studs but I read somewhere to not mess with walls in old houses bc of the possibility of creating some moisture issues.

Thanks yall for such good and speedy responses! My husband is on nights for two weeks but at the end of that I plan on trying tk coerce him to cut a bigger section behind our dresser to see better. On this project we only cut 1-2 inches straight
