We have this nice octagonal shaped area on our deck that I'd like to add a gas fire pit to. I am thinking an octagon pit would be nice in this area. I'll measure the area to get the exact sizing.

I already have a natural gas stub outside exiting the basement wall.

Looking at the pre-built octagons, some with the gas plumbing already, holy cow the price are UP THERE! I would obviously be finishing these with an appropriate stone veneer siding, and surface.

Has anyone built something like this before? I haven't priced out materials yet. I have a welder. Some of these are aluminum framed, some are galvanized steel. My mig welder is set up for steel, and I have appropriate gas/wire for stainless steel. Would need a spool gun to do aluminum.

Is this something I can reasonably build for much cheaper, with some time and math? Or am I going to be hating my life, not saving money, and wishing I'd just bought the one already built? Already have the tools needed.

Any other considerations?

Thank you.

Agreed, not going to use wood for all the reasons not to use wood.

Surface will be ~20-24" from the surface of the deck, and that is where the gas burners, stones etc. will be.

People are running gas fire pits all over the place on composite, so that part I'm not concerned with. I just want to make sure it's done right of course, and the feasibility of building this thing.
