New Standard Door Size in Larger Opening

Hi Everyone,

I have this weird set of double hung windows that goes down to the floor. I have a standard sized french door set with an full glass inswing door on the left (from the perspective of the photo below) and a full glass stationary panel on the right that I'd like to put in place of the window set.

The rough opening is something around 83", so I have to decrease the width by about 11 to 12" to accommodate the standard door size. The rough opening height seems to be okay.

The two aspects I was hoping to get opinions/ideas on are 1. how to decrease the width of the opening so that the final siding/door transition looks the best and 2. how to do it to maintain the best insulative properties.

Seems to me like the best bet is to split the ~12" difference between the 2 sides and then simply trim the new door with fairly wide (~6") vertical boards. In this case, would you stack ~4 studs to each side of the existing rough opening? Seems like a pretty poor thermal bridge. Make a box for each side with ~3" of insulation in between 2 single vertical studs?

I'm not totally against replacing the window set with something other than a standard door set, but I already have a standard door and I don't necessarily want to spend money for a custom fill.

Thanks for any ideas.

Is the window sitting on the floor or is it up 8 or 10 inches?
Remove the inside trim and measure from stud to stud for the correct measure
A double 36" exterior door is about 75" rough opening.
Hard to plan for maybe measurements.

Either way won't make any noticeable difference in your heating or cooling bill, so do whatever is easiest. The important thing with either option is to seal it so there are no air leaks. That will make a difference.
