I bought a mobile home back in 2005 (18 years ago) and am now only learning about the hazards of Polybutylene plumbing and the fact that my home has it. Didn't have a home inspection done before purchase. My home was constructed in 1995. I read a lot professionals saying that type of piping needs to be replaced ASAP to avoid a catastrophe. Are they right? Do I need to take immediate action? No known leaks so far even though the home is now 28 years old. I have public water which means chlorine is in the water which supposedly damages these pipes. All my neighbors have mobile homes about the same age as mine so I'd think they have Poly B also and yet in my 17 years living here I have never seen one neighbor have new piping put in their home. Either they are unaware of the problem or they decided not to worry about it until a leak occurs. Any rough idea what new piping for a mobile home would cost? I guess PEX is the common piping now.
There are two philosophies out there,

One says do not fix it till it is broken.
The other says preventive measures/maintenance before it breaks.
Using a car tire as example, you can drive till it fails.
Or you can replace it before it fails.
It is all in the what happens when it fails.
