Kitchen cabinet refresh advice needed

About to start refinishing my kitchen cabinets. Currently they are covered in some type of varnish. See pic - there are a lot of fine grooves. I have two questions:
1. What do you recommend using for sanding. I really like the Ekasand with the spongy sanding pads that contour to the profile of the wood, but I am not a professional and so I'm not looking to spend $600 on a sander for a one-time project. I have been looking around for similar products from HD and Lowes and Amazon but haven't found any. Are there any competitors out there with the same type of flexible sanding pads that get into those cracks and corners?

2. Is a light sanding okay to just "scuff" the surface before priming/painting? In my last house I did the same project and had to use paint stripper because there were multiple built-up paint layers and I don't want to go through that again. These only have the one original varnish-type coating so I'm pretty confident that sanding will be sufficient. If I have to sand to bare wood I will, but will definitely need a good recommendation to my first question to get all those crevices sanded out.
Thank you for any advice and recommendations.
