I was helping my dad paint his house. He was using a sprayer and he made a shield made our of illuminum so that he didn't get any on the windows and every so often he would go and spray it off in the grass. Is that bad?
I'm more concerned about him contaminating the groundwater and killing people
Is it latex or oil based paint?

Some states, like California, have a "paint stewardship" program, which aims to foster proper disposal of paint.

Paint Stewardship Program Overview (ca.gov)

Part of what they do is fund local "toxic waste disposal sites" where you can easily take bad stuff and dispose of it without hassle. Much better than the old days.

It reminds me of when they started to make a big deal of toxic waste disposal in the 1980s. At first, no one got the idea that it had to be made simple for the users, or they wouldn't do it.

I know somebody who read the label wrong and tried to clean latex off a paintbrush with mineral spirits. What an awful gooey mess. I’m not going to give his name, but he posts here all the time. What a doofus. Its was a good purdy brush, and it went in the trash.
Well it wasn't me, at least not so far.
