The wall is down to the studs...I planning to install cement board directly to the studs. Is it appropriate to install the cultured stone directly to the cement board without a wire mesh or scratch coat? The stone is a stacked stone?

The wall is down to the studs...I planning to install cement board directly to the studs. Is it appropriate to install the cultured stone directly to the cement board without a wire mesh or scratch coat? The stone is a stacked stone?
I like putting a scratch coat on for most installs over Durock. The reason is you get much better initial (faster) grab than with out it. It works better i you let the scratchcoat dry completely first.
