That must go to the framing. Just see if your cover cares whether it's a 1/2 back.

It needs to be all mounted before drywall.

I installed quite a few new construction fans and I have replaced some old fans. Whenever I replaced old fans without access from above I've always had to cut out the drywall in order to achieve proper installation. Just trying to hook up proper metal ducting would be very tough after the fact.

Also, I do not see from the instructions how it goes in over the drywall.

Well it's better than vinyl but I only use ridged with the approved tape.
