I have a bathroom laundry closet that houses a side-by-side washer and dryer behind a pair of standard bi-fold doors that ride along a top track. The doors are 32 inches from the back wall, but it looks like I'll need a depth of 36 to 39 inches, depending on which new washer and dryer I end up putting in there.
I could trim three inches off that clearance requirement if I side-vent the dryer, and I might be able to gain an inch by cutting out some drywall (there's concrete beyond that), but I think it might be best just to build out the front of the closet opening so the doors can be repositioned further out.
I've never done any wall or door framing before, but it seems like I could attach 2x4s and 2x2s to extend the existing plain drywall opening, cover it with molding and paint any exposed wood for a nice, clean look, no demolition or more drywall necessary. Then I move the door hardware out to where it needs to be.
Am I missing something here? Is there an easier way, or a better one?
