How to repair this strip of damaged drywall?

In order to remove the tub, I had to cut out this section of drywall. Can this shape and size be repaired or do I need to cut out the entire lower section and replace?

For reference, the tile is 8"x12"

Thanks!

Yes that can be repaired.

It is fairly simple , You need to install a board behind the drywall, screwed to the stud, then screw the drywall to it, then fill the void, waterproof all that, and tile it.

We have a professional here with many tutorials to teach you, I'm sure that he will be along soon to tell you which of his tutorials to view.

You can cut a square, and it's not necessary to go to the next stud. Put a peice of wood behind the hole screw it to the existing drywall and screw the patch peice to the piece of wood.

You don't need to cut back to the next stud, cut just enough to square it up and get a backer board in there.

You say tub, but guessing you really mean toilet.
If so if it was mine I'd be removing that shut off valve, removing all the drywall adding a 2 x 4 on the right hand side and replace the whole sheet.
It would save you at least a day's work doing all the taping and finishing.

CheezeFriend.....

Try to simply explain what you want to replace.... in pic 1, you say do I need to cut out the entire lower section.... and next time we see a partial tiled wall.

Basically, yes, you need backing for tile.... you can patch it as suggested... or tear out and replace a whole sheet....

Are we missing something.?????

It's the exact same wall I am referring to, I was just providing 2 different angles for reference. Pic 1 is looking straight at the wall, behind where the toilet will go. Pic 2 shows the same wall, but what it butts against: a tiled partition wall for the shower.

The damaged section will not be tiled. It just needs to be repaired. I just don't know if I need to cut out the entire section from the floor to the top of where the damage starts or if I can just patch it. It's just not a shape I have ever patched before. i.e it's long and skinny, rather than a hole no bigger than 4"x4". I hope this makes sense. Thanks for bearing with me!

"It's just not a shape I have ever patched before."

This is why the suggestions are directing you to cut it "square." Much easier to repair and finish that way. A great way to do the repair is to actually cut a piece of drywall first, pin it up against the wall that need repaired, use a pencil to mark the perimeter, then using an oscillating tool or a drywall saw, cut along the pencil marks and you now have a perfect piece to fit in there as a repair. You don't necessarily have to go "stud to stud" although that makes the job easier. If you can't go "stud to stud" you will then have to a attach a piece of 1 x wood to the drywall on the wall in order to be able to screw your repair piece to something solid on the left side of your pic. Once the piece is in place, repair as you normally would with drywall mud, paper or fiberglas tape........
