We just put drywall up in the basement. Our current set up has two light switches attached to the outside of the two posts at the bottom of the stairs. We did not put drywall up on the stairs and the switches will stay where they are. However, I would like to give them more of a finished look. Is there something I can cover them with? Most of the wire covers I've found online are not thick enough to cover the conduit and I'm not sure what to do about the box. I would love ideas.

Build a box around the post and the conduit with plywood, paint to match.

I would have concerns about a buried junction box wherever that conduit goes to.

Wiremold may give you a cleaner look. EMT can be done a little cleaner than that, and painted to match.

Nail a 2x4 to each side of that 2x4 and drywall it.

If the cable still shows at the top add a trim to hide it,

I dunno. It's a basement with laundry. How pretty do you want to make it? I'd leave it be.

I'd hate to make the columns so large. I'd paint the conduit to match the existing columns to make it disappear.

There is no j-box in the picture ... if you wrap the existing conduit and leave the switch box accessible … what’s the problem?

Where does the conduit terminate in the ceiling? A buried JB? Hopefully its just a sleeve... which you can delete if you case the post in around the cable and switch.

There is a junction box in the ceiling but there's an access panel over it.

Don't know, but i’m assuming its existing condition so not part of the question.
